Alexander Nikolaev is a Russian composer who with his mastery of the piano, effortlessly blends light and darkness.
Alexander introduces a dark and intense motif, as if a stage was being set for a final showdown between two conflicting characters. The melody line is sharp and pointy while the left hand plays an ominous bass, in case you forgot about the fact that this is a Russian piece.
The melody goes through beautiful dramatic movements without being theatrical or pompous, and I am most impressed with the subtlety by which Nikolaev sprinkles in some major chords without losing the heavy and dark vibe of the piece as a whole.
